In
the United States, percussion drums are used often in music and even
poetry to add emphasis and interest. Despite the fact that these drums
are used so often in America, the influence of this music comes from
everywhere. Just as the United States is a melting pot for cultures,
it is also a collection of a lot of different kinds of music.
Percussion drums came to the United States from many other places,
including:
• Cuba – Percussion drums are used very prominently in
Cuban music. Because there is such a heavy Cuban influence in southern
Florida and other areas in the United States, there are a lot of kinds
of music heard in these areas that feature percussion drums.
• Africa – Percussion drums are also very prominent among
African-influenced music. Many of the tribes and groups in Africa
use and continue to use percussion drums as part of rituals as well
as festivals. This use of these drums has manifested itself in U.S.
culture as well.
Percussion drums are now heard in many different styles of music
from many different cultures.
