Drummers never get enough credit: they’re always the brunt of jokes or relegated to the back of the stage; not to mention dealing with uppity guitar players who question their “musicianship.” Even when they get to show of their prowess by performing an amazing drum solo, they’re often chided for their overindulgence and attention-seeking behavior.

Despite all the negativity towards them, drumming requires an advanced level of eye-hand coordination, internal rhythm and ambidexterity. There is nothing quite like watching a master drummer in complete control of their instrument – whether they’re performing an intense solo or playing a beat in an unconventional time signature.

Of all the instruments, drums tend to fit kids’ personalities the best. Children love the noise and physical activity associated with drumming (the exact same reasons why parents don’t like drums as much). Many companies like CB offer standard beginner sets for kids to get the idea of what it’s like to be behind a set. These models are also relatively cheap – around $500, which is a comparatively affordable outlet for a child to develop creativity.

A basic drum set consists of a bass drum, snare, tom drums (usually three: a high tom, mid tom and floor drum), and cymbals (ride, crash and hi-hat). A beginner drummer won’t need more than that, but once they realize that it’s something the want to stick with, they can move on to sets of better quality and specialized to fit the type of music they’re playing.

Rock drum became very extravagant in the 80s, especially with the rise of metal bands like Mötley Crüe. Tommy Lee’s set was the epitome of extravagance with more pieces than anybody would ever need! They even solved the drummer-attention-seeking problem by building a contraption that would levitate Lee’s set in the air and flipping it around while he soloed. Since then, rock drummers have toned their sets down – even preferring the simplicity of only two tom drums. Punk rockers like Blink 182’s Travis Barker and Alkaline Trio’s Derek Grant use that set-up.

There are many notable companies that specialize in making quality drums. Perhaps the most well known are DW, Ludwig, Yamaha and Pearl – all of which make different models that specially cater to the rock, jazz or fusion drummer. One of the advantages of DW drums (a fairly new company) is that they custom make each drum piece on their sets rather than the factory-manufactured sets of other companies. However, DW sets are often very expensive and should only be considered for advanced drummers.

Drum machines and electronic drums have become increasingly popular. Originally used by the Moody Blues in the 70s, these drums work by sending a signal to the processor whenever there’s a change in voltage over the head (i.e. whenever the drum is struck). The processor translates the change into a waveform which produces the desired drum sound. Even though these can simulate acoustic drums very well, most drummers still prefer the feel and sound of an organic, acoustic set.
